Venue at a glance
Highbury was built as a family home in 1878 by Birmingham's famous parliamentarian, Rt. Hon. Joseph Chamberlain MP.
Chamberlain was at the peak of his political career when he commissioned Highbury which he affectionately termed his "country retreat". Perhaps it was in testament to the rigours of political life that in later years Chamberlain referred to Highbury as his "haven of peace, existing at the heart of endless agitation."
Today Highbury is still special. It has retained both the charm and splendour originally created by Chamberlain's architects. The interior is a splendid example of Victorian heritage : rich and luxurious finishings and the galleried main hall create an intimate and peaceful atmosphere.
